鶹Ƶվ Deans' Council and Status Committee announced the naming of four faculty to endowed professorships:
- Dr. Leah Chase is a professor of biology and chemistry and has been a Hope College faculty member
since 2000. She was awarded the Drs. Edward A. & Elizabeth Hofma endowed professorship, which was established by the board of trustees of the Drs. Edward A. and Elizabeth
Hofma Trust, to bestow upon a faculty member with major instruction responsibility
for pre-medical students. Drs. Edward A. and Elizabeth Hofma were longtime residents
of Grand Haven, where they both practiced.
- Katherine Sullivan is a professor of fine arts and has been a Hope faculty member since 2003. She
was awarded the Howard R. and Margaret E. Sluyter endowed professorship, given by Mrs. Margaret E. Sluyter to be held by a faculty member in the Department
of Art and Art History whose primary responsibilities include teaching courses and
professional activity in the field of interior design. Dr. Howard R. Sluyter graduated
from Hope in 1928 and had a distinguished career in business. He served as Hope College
Trustee from 1971-1986. Through her lifelong interest and involvement in interior
design, Mrs. Sluyter recognized the place of interior design in a liberal arts curriculum.
- Dr. Rebecca Mann is an associate professor of education instruction and has been a Hope faculty
member since 2013. She was awarded the Susan M. and Glenn G. Cherup endowed professorship, established by Susan M. Mooy '64 Cherup and Glenn G. Cherup – along with an anonymous
donor – to provide financial support for a faculty member who is an outstanding teacher,
demonstrates a commitment to the mission of Hope College and has a record of recognized
excellence in preparing undergraduates for careers as teachers. The professorship
is held by a member of the education department with preference given to a qualified
professor whose work is focused on children with special needs.
- Dr. Brian Yurk ‘03 is a professor of mathematics and has been a Hope faculty member since 2009.
He was awarded the Kenneth G. Herrick endowed professorship, which was established by anonymous gift in 1981 and named in honor of Mr. Kenneth G. Herrick.
Mr. Herrick served as president of the Herrick Foundation and chairman of the board
of trustees of Tecumseh Products, Inc. The professorship was created in recognition
of – and appreciation for – his generous support of Hope College. This chair is held
by a tenured faculty member in one of the following departments: biology, chemistry,
computer science, economics and business, geology and environmental sciences, mathematics
and statistics or physics.
“We extend our congratulations for these impressive faculty members who are so committed to their students and for their phenomenal work and service to Hope College,” said Gerald Griffin, Hope’s provost.
In addition to recognizing faculty members for excellence, endowed professorships provide funding for summer research projects as well as some salary support. Hope has had endowed positions since the 19th century, and currently has 24 endowed professorships and one endowed chair for faculty and eight endowed administrative positions.
