Visiting Research Fellows

Topics have ranged from disease and death in the early colony to Reformed and Christian Reformed missionary work.

Applications are invited from qualified scholars, including Ph.D. students at other universities, for a fellowship offered through the Visiting Research Fellows Program. Up to two fellowships per academic year, each normally for up to 10 weeks, will be awarded. Regular members of the Hope College faculty may be appointed for up to one semester of the academic year.

Visiting fellows are provided research space at the Theil-Nyenhuis Research Center, the home of the Van Raalte Institute. The institute will also make available its resources, such as copying and internet access. Housing is not provided as part of the fellowship.

Criteria for Selection

Proposals for support must demonstrate that:

• The proposal research fits the mission statement of the Van Raalte Institute
• The scholar is qualified to conduct such research
• The resources of the VRI and the Hope College Archives will be consulted

Stipend

The VRI will pay a maximum grant of $3,000. The grant is normally used to offset travel and living expenses. For a Hope College faculty member appointed as a Visiting Research Fellow, the institute will pay up to $3,000 toward the cost of hiring a replacement for the faculty member’s teaching responsibilities for that semester.

Expectations

The VRI expects that a visiting research fellow will:

• Work on the project outlined in the proposal that was the basis for their selection
• Present a lecture, reporting on the results of their work, at a public colloquium
• Agree that a video of this lecture will be posted on the VRI website
• Acknowledge the support of the VRI in any publication(s) resulting from the fellowship
• Provide the VRI with a copy of any further publication(s) resulting from their tenure at the institute
