Across Borders

Dutch Migration to North America and Australia
Edited by Jacob E. Nyenhuis, Suzanne M. Sinke and Robert P. Swierenga

Book coverThe papers in this volume come from the Seventeenth Biennial Conference of the Association for the Advancement of Dutch American Studies (AADAS), held in Ancaster, Ontario, Canada, June 2009.

The theme “Across Borders” was chosen for the conference in part to reflect the literal passage across borders, which this meeting in Canada entailed for AADAS members from the United States. Yet “across borders” also sought specific connections across the U.S.-Canadian border, and between the Netherlands and North America, either through individual research or, as the contributions here indicate, through studies that demonstrate new examples of patterns we know from previous scholarship or that provide case studies for future scholars to explore in comparative context.

Recent scholarship emphasizes the links and movements across national boundaries, the inter-connections of specific parts of the world along these lines. Yet “across borders” also embodied more figurative meanings, such as comparisons between generations, or the search for identity that meant replicating or replacing previous ideas and practices in a new setting or because of different circumstances. These themes come to the fore here.
